Taiwan
in the Republic of China. Formerly called Formosa, a country off the
southeast coast of China comprising the island of Taiwan, the Pescadores
and other smaller islands. An important trade center in the 19th century,
Taiwan was ceded to Japan in 1895 and regained by China after World War
II (1945). Taiwan broke off from mainland China in 1949. Taipei is the
capital and the largest city. Population, 18,457,923. A brief summary of
Taiwan/China recent history for context by Laura
Aboli:
• 1949: Chinese Civil War ends. Mao's communists take mainland
China, while the defeated Nationalists (KMT) flee to Taiwan, claiming to
still represent all of China.
• 1971: UN recognizes People's Republic of China (PRC) as the
legitimate China. Taiwan loses its UN seat.
• 1979: The U.S. switches formal diplomatic recognition from
Taipei to Beijing, but passes the Taiwan Relations Act, pledging to help
Taiwan defend itself.
• Now:
– China sees Taiwan as a breakaway province.
– Taiwan sees itself as a self-governing nation.
– War risk rises as Beijing vows 'reunification' by force if necessary.
Taiwan operates like an independent country. Beijing insists it's not.
The U.S. walks a tightrope between support and strategic ambiguity.
